Here is a list with what I gathered to be important people and places in the history of the ring. It is mostly a repetition of all the information outlined in the Council held in Elrond's house but in a simpler form, as those pages were loaded with information.
-Gloin and Gimli : father / son dwarves, Dwarves of the Lonely Mountains
-Aragon: Strider, Chieftan of Dunedain, Isildur's heir, will go to Minas Tirth
Dunedain: descendants of Numenoreans; go to Eriador with Elendil, Isildur, and Anarion; Westernesse Men
-Glorfindel: elf Lord, part of Elrond's castle
-Legolas : elf, son of King of Elves in Mirkwood, sent as messenger
-Boromir: man ; comes from Gondor, holds Minas Tirith; has dreams of riddle, wants to know for real if it is the One Ring
Dain, King Under the Mountain, Dwarf, has problems with his people; darkness spreading; lets Balin, Ori, and Oin try to go back to Moria. Now, 30 years later, Sauron messenger comes, offers three Dwarf rings in return for help finding Frodo
In the Second Age, the rings were formed (v. the story taking place in the Third Age)
-Eleven-smiths (from Eregion) and Dwarves (Moria) tricked into alliance with Sauron;
together they expand "knowledge," but Sauron tricks Elves and ensnares them
-Moria(elvish tongue) = Khazad-dûm = Dwarrowdelf = Black Pit, land of Dwarves
-Celebrimbor (elf) caught onto Sauron's evil and hid the three Elven King rings
-Númenor: Westernesse Island Realm of Men , later falls and men "return to Middle-Earth"
-Elendil the Tall, man
Sons: Isildur Elendil and Anarion
Isildur-> Valandil -> Aragorn
Anarion -> Meneldil, blood line fails Anarion dies in war against Sauron
Rule Gondor in the South + Arnor in the North
Gondor:
-main city Osgiliath, Citadel of the Stars
-Minas Ithal: tower of the Rising Moon; at Mountains of Shadow
--> Minas Morgul: taken over by creatures from Mordor, Tower of Sorcery
-Minas Arnor: Tower of of the Setting Sun; at White Mountains, where white tree grows
(planted by Isildur)
--> Minas Tirith, Tower of the Gaurd
Arnor: population dwindled, now deserted
-Elrond : Son of Eärendil and Elwing
-Battle of Dagorlad
Gil-Galad with spear, Aegolas, dies
Isildur with sword, Narsil breaks and he dies
Isildur takes the Ring, later loses is in river Anduin
Saruman the Wise, ally, persuades White Council to leave Sauron alone and only watch when Sauron takes shape as Necromancer in Dol Guldur; Saruman now corrupt and wants to essentially "usurp" the Dark Lord
Gollum escaped captivity and told Dark Lord that Ring was in Shire
Fellowship of the Ring:
Frodo as Ring-Bearer - Sam as his faithful servant - Gandalf - Legolas for Elves -
Boromir - Gimli for Dwarves- Aragorn for men - Pippin and Merry
